Kostroma oblast is located in the north-eastern part of European Russia. It is part of the Central Federal District. It is bordered by Vologda oblast, Ivanovo oblast, Nizhny Novgorod oblast, Yaroslavl oblast and Kirov oblast.

Population – the 67th place among the subjects of the Russian Federation.
