Vologda oblast is located in the north-east part of the East European Plain. It is part of the Northwestern Federal District. It is bordered by Arkhangelsk oblast, Kirov oblast, Kostroma oblast, Yaroslavl oblast, Tver oblast, Novgorod oblast, Leningrad oblast and the Republic of Karelia.

Administrative center – Vologda.
Area – the 26th place among the subjects of the Russian Federation.
Population – the 43rd place among the subjects of the Russian Federation.
